Over five years ago my life changed when I met and worked alongside four incredible humans Patricia Garza, Nijeul Porter, Manuel Prieto, and Víctor Vázquez. As Pride joined forces with BLM this month I got to witness allyship in a new way. These dear friends stood beside me, so now I want to stand beside them! They are artists and creatives and they are working tirelessly “behind the curtain” to ensure our art spaces are becoming more diverse and equitable. I see them and honor them! Some of the business elements of pursuing a career in the arts can be pretty exciting. Finding solid representation, seeing your work showcased on professional platforms, creating a totally on-brand website, formalizing your business bank account …But there’s another piece of the puzzle I’ve been reminded of over the last few months at Mischief Managed: don’t forget the art part.

Since starting as Marketing Coordinator for Mischief Managed this fall, I’ve worked with a number of Mischief Managed clients to help shape their online footprints and hone their personal stories. Through the process, I’ve been inspired by our clients’ creativity and resolve and have learned a lot about the challenges facing freelance artists.
